Congratulations to Michael Root, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, who recently received the “Mentoring Award” at the 2018 Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center (SKCC) Member Retreat, held at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. The award was presented to Root by Jeff Benovic, PhD, Thomas Eakins Endowed Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Associate Director of Education at the SKCC.
Root joined Thomas Jefferson University in 2001 and currently directs the PhD program in Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology. He was also recently appointed as an Assistant Dean in the Jefferson College of Biomedical Sciences. In addition to his significant education responsibilities, Root has an active research program focused on understanding the mechanisms involved in HIV entry.
In 2017, Root had two PhD students graduate from his laboratory, including Koree Ahn, who had a paper published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry that was selected as the “Paper of the Week” (top 1-2%). Ahn also received a 2017 Herbert Tabor Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
“Dr. Root serves as an outstanding mentor to his own students as well as a role model and mentor to many of the graduate students at Jefferson,” said Benovic.
