The Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson is pleased to announce that Maria Werner-Wasik, MD, FASTRO, has been appointed to the position of Executive Vice Chair for Radiation Oncology Integration and the Walter Curran Professor of Radiation Oncology. As the Executive Vice Chair, she will focus her activities on harmonizing and integrating all clinical radiation oncology operations at Jefferson’s main campus and all radiation oncology network facilities. These efforts represent a part of Jefferson’s commitment to the delivery of value-based, high-quality oncologic care across the entire Jefferson Health Enterprise.
Over her twenty years at Jefferson, Dr. Werner-Wasik has served in many leadership roles, including Residency Program Director, Director of Clinical Operations, Director of Clinical Research, and, most recently, a Senior Physician Leader of the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center’s Clinical Trials Office (CTO).
She is an internationally recognized expert in the treatment of lung cancer, having demonstrated contributions to clinical excellence, education, and clinical trials as an American Board of Radiology specialty board examiner, Lung Cancer Track Chair at the American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Annual Meeting, Publications Chair for the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG), and the Principal Investigator for Jefferson’s NRG Oncology, a National Cancer Institute clinical trial network.
Dr. Werner-Wasik has published more than 130 scholarly papers and is a sought-after speaker on the multidisciplinary care of lung cancer. Her multiple achievements and contributions to the field of radiation oncology have been recognized by her selection to become a Fellow of the American Society of Radiation Oncology (FASTRO).
In her new role, she will work closely with the medical directors of all network facilities and with Karen Knudsen, PhD, Director of the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center; Andrew Chapman, DO, FACP, Chief of Cancer Services, Jefferson Health System, Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center; Matthew Carabasi, MD, Senior Director of Strategic Oncology Partnerships; Alex Khariton, RTT, MBA, Vice President of Radiation Oncology and Cancer Services; and Anne Lowther, MSRS, Radiation Oncology Administrative Associate, and Jefferson’s Integration Team.
